I will need another week or so to finish reading the remaining 6 percent of the OT and 5 percent of the NT, bringing to completion this 7th round of Old Testament and 14th round of New Testament readings.

Passage for Today
For I will take you from amongst the nations and gather you out of all the countries,
and will bring you into your own land.
I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean.
I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols.
I will also give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you.
I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh.
I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes.
You will keep my ordinances and do them.
You will dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers.
You will be my people, and I will be your God.

Today's post is an update of my slow reading over the past three months. I will not be able to complete my 7th round of Old Testament and my 13th round of New Testament reading by the end of this year. (My original target was to finish both 13th and 14th rounds of the NT along with the 7th round of OT.)

Passage for Today
20 But you, beloved, keep building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit.
21 Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to eternal life.
22 On some have compassion, making a distinction,
23 and some save, snatching them out of the fire with fear, hating even the clothing stained by the flesh.
24 Now to him who is able to keep them from stumbling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory in great joy,
25 to God our Savior, who alone is wise, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and forever. Amen.

Today I have reached the end of my 12th Cycle of New Testament readings. This has been an intensive round of readings, having begun late at the beginning of October and taking me just one and a half months to complete reading all 27 books of the NT.

Passage for Today
2 Peter 1:5b – 9

New English Translation

. . . make every effort to add to your faith excellence, to excellence, knowledge; 6 to knowledge, self-control; to self-control, perseverance; to perseverance, godliness; 7 to godliness, brotherly affection; to brotherly affection, unselfish love. 8 For if these things are really yours and are continually increasing, they will keep you from becoming ineffective and unproductive in your pursuit of knowing our Lord Jesus Christ more intimately. 9 But concerning the one who lacks such things – he is blind. That is to say, he is nearsighted, since he has forgotten about the cleansing of his past sins.

Today I have begun to read longer portions of the Bible again after several months of short interrupted readings. In the Old Testament, I read the last six chapters of Second Kings followed by the first six chapters of First Chronicles, up to the genealogies of the tribe of Issachar. In the New Testament, I read the entire Epistle General of James and the First Epistle of Peter.

Over the past two weeks, I have read the Epistles of Paul — beginning with Second Thessalonians through the end of Hebrews.

This was followed by my reading of the Epistle General of James, the two Epistles of Peter and the three of John.

I began reading the book of Revelation three days ago and have completed chapter 12 today.

Passage of the Day
15 Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners – of whom I am the worst.
16 But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life.
17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

1 Timothy 1:15-17  New International Version
1 Here is a trustworthy saying: whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task.
2 Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,
3 not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.

1 Timothy 3:1 - 3  New International Version
7 Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly.
8 For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.
9 This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance.

1 Tim othy 4:7 - 9  New International Version
11 Here is a trustworthy saying:
If we died with him,
we will also live with him;
12 if we endure,
we will also reign with him.
If we disown him,
he will also disown us;
13 if we are faithless,
he remains faithful,
for he cannot disown himself.

2 Timothy 2:11 - 13  New International Version
4 But when the kindness and love of God our Saviour appeared,
5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,
6 whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Saviour,
7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.
8 This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone.

Over the past five days, I have sprinted through a series of short books of minor prophets in the OT and similarly short epistles in the NT.

In the remaining ten days of December, before the year is over, there is one book each in the OT and NT left to be read — Malachi and Revelation.

Passage of the Day

Isaiah chapters 8 and 28, and likewise Psalm 118, contain prophecies about a corner-stone chosen by God at which some will take offense and over which some will stumble. However, those who put their trust in this corner-stone will not be put to shame.

1 Peter 2:6 – 8  KJV  King James Version
6 Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.
7 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,
8 And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.
Esaias 28:16  LXX  Septuagint Brenton
therefore thus saith the Lord, even the Lord,
Behold, I lay for the foundations of Sion a costly stone, a choice, a corner-stone, a precious stone, for its foundations; and he that believes on him shall by no means be ashamed
Romans 9:33  WEB  World English Bible
even as it is written, 'Behold, I lay in Zion a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense. And no one who believes in him will be put to shame.'
Psalm 117 (118):22 – 23  LXX  Septuagint Brenton
22 The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner.
23 This has been done of the Lord; and it is wonderful in our eyes.
Matthew 21:42  WEB  World English Bible
Jesus said to them, 'Did you never read in the scriptures, 'The stone which the builders rejected, The same was made the head of the corner. This was from the Lord. It is marvelous in our eyes?'
Mark 12:10 – 11  WEB  World English Bible
10 Haven't you even read this scripture: 'The stone which the builders rejected, The same was made the head of the corner.
11 This was from the Lord, It is marvelous in our eyes'?'
Luke 20:17  WEB  World English Bible
But he looked at them, and said, 'Then what is this that is written, 'The stone which the builders rejected, The same was made the chief cornerstone?'
Acts 4:11  WEB  World English Bible
He is 'the stone which was regarded as worthless by you, the builders, which was made the head of the corner.'
Eph 2:19 – 20  WEB  World English Bible
19 So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God,
20 being built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the chief cornerstone;
Esaias 8:14 – 15  LXX  Septuagint Brenton
14 And if thou shalt trust in him, he shall be to thee for a sanctuary; and ye shall not come against him as against a stumbling-stone, neither as against the falling of a rock: but the houses of Jacob are in a snare, and the dwellers in Jerusalem in a pit.
15 Therefore many among them shall be weak, and fall, and be crushed; and they shall draw nigh, and men shall be taken securely.
Romans 9:33  WEB  World English Bible
even as it is written, 'Behold, I lay in Zion a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense. And no one who believes in him will be put to shame.'

In my New Testament reading yesterday, I finished reading the Epistles to the Hebrews and the Epistle General of James. Today, I finished reading First Peter.

For my Old Testament reading, I finised reading First Kings on Wednesday 24Aug22, then continued with Second Kings, covering the first ten chapters.

Passage of the day

20 Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, 21 equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in you that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Would you love life and see good days?

Friday 03Jun2022
1 Peter 3:1 - 5:14 WEB (55 verses)
2 Peter 1:1 - 3:18 WEB (61 verses)

Today is the Sixth Day of the Biblical Week. It is Preparation Day. Let us finish all our work for the week, tie up all loose ends and prepare to enter into a time of Sabbath Rest starting at sunset this evening.

On this Preparation Day, I am reminded by 1 Peter chapter 3 to guard my words, to refrain from speaking evil, to turn away from evil and do good, and to seek, nay, even pursue peace.

The Apostle calls upon the disciples to do this if they "would love life and see good days".

1 Peter 3:10 - 12  WEB  World English Bible
10 For, 'He who would love life, And see good days, Let him keep his tongue from evil, And his lips from speaking deceit.
11 Let him turn away from evil, and do good. Let him seek peace, and pursue it.
12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, And his ears open to their prayer; But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.'

Verses 10 to 12 in the above passage is a quotation from Psalm 34:12 - 16a in the Masoretic texts (Psalm 33:13 - 17a in the Septuagint), as shown below:

Psalm 34:12 - 16a  KJV  King James Version
12 What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good?
13 Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile.
14 Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.
15 The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.
16 The face of the LORD is against them that do evil, . . .
Psalm 33:13 - 17a  LXX  Septuagint Brenton
13 What man is there that desires life, loving to see good days?
14 Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile.
15 Turn away from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.
16 The eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer:
17 but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil, . . .

I wrote about this passage briefly in my devotional blog last October, link below:

Brothers and Sisters in the Anointed One, let us, as many as would love life and would see good days, keep ourselves from speaking evil and from deceit. Then the eyes of the LORD will be upon us, and his ears will be open to our cry.

Do you harbour bitter jealousy and selfish ambition?

Thursday 02Jun2022
James 3:1 - 5:20 WEB (55 verses)
1 Peter 1:1 - 2:25 WEB (50 verses)

A lesson I learned today from my reading of the Epistle General of James comes from chapter 3 where the Apostle tells us that if we harbour bitter jealousy and selfish ambitions in our midst, we do not have the wisdom from above. Instead, we are living a life that is "earthly, sensual, and demonic" (verse 15), and our jealousy and ambition brings about confusion and evil deeds (verse 16).

In contrast to such confusion and evil, the wisdom that comes from above is described as pure, peaceful, gentle, reasonable, merciful, impartial, and without hypocrisy. (verse 17).

When we do away with bitter jealousy and selfish ambition, we sow the fruit of righteousness in peace.

James 3:14 - 18  WEB  World English Bible
14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, don't boast and don't lie against the truth.
15 This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, sensual, and demonic.
16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition are, there is confusion and every evil deed.
17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceful, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
18 Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

Brothers and Sisters in the Anointed One, let us beware of harbouring bitter jealousy and selfish ambitions in our hearts and among our brethren. Let us instead sow the fruit of righteousnness in peace. Let us be makers of the peace of God.

The glory of man is as the flower of grass

Sunday 2021.09.12

Today is the first day of a new biblical week.

My OT reading this morning covers Ezekiel chapters 36 through 44, a long reading of nine chapters.

In the NT, I begin reading the First Epistle General of Peter, going through the first two chapters. 1 Peter 1:24 reminds us of the scripture given in Isaiah 40:6 - 8, that says:

1 Peter 1:24 - 25 (Isaiah 40:6,7,8) KJV
24 All flesh is as grass,
And all the glory of man as the flower of grass.
The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:
25 But the word of the Lord endureth for ever.
And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.

Long readings on Sabbath

Saturday 2021.05.15

Shabbat Shalom. Today, the seventh day of the week, is a Sabbath Day of rest, a day consecrated by the LORD God Almighty after he had finished his work of Creation.

As I rest from all my work, I have found time for long readings of the OT, covering chapters 20 through 29 of Jeremiah (a total of 245 verses), and chapters 15 through 24 of Proverbs (a total of 306 verses). Altogether, I read twenty chapters of the OT with a total of 551 verses.

Besides my long readings of the OT, I have also read 1 Peter chapters 4 through 5, bringing me to the end of this epistle. Tomorrow I will begin reading the 2nd Epistle of Peter.

For the Apocryphal reading, I read another chapter from Baruch from the LXX

Summary:
Jeremiah 20:1 - 29:32 ASV (245 v)

My scripture readings on this Preparation Day brings me through another three chapters of Jeremiah, followed by three chapters of Proverbs in the OT. Along with this, I also read 1 Peter chapter 3 in the NT.

Today I begin reading the first chapter of the book of Baruch in the LXX Apocrypha.

At last, I finished reading Sirach

Thursday 2021.05.13

I began reading the books of the Apocrypha for the first time in March last year. From the beginning of March until mid-June, I covered the books of Tobit, 1 Esdras, and Judith in the Brenton LXX. That was followed by a nine-month hiatus, when I was reading only the OT and NT, before I resumed with the book of Wisdom in early March this year. This book took me almost the entire month of March and it was on 25Mar21 that I began reading the book of Sirach, a long book of 51 chapters. At last, after fifty long days, I finished reading Sirach 51 today.

Tomorrow, I wil begin reading the book of Baruch in the LXX Apocrypha.

For my OT reading today, I covered Jeremiah chapters 14 through 16 and Proverbs 9 through 11. I also read 1 Peter chapter 2 in the NT.

Summary:

Having finished reading the Epistle of James in the NT yesterday, I went ahead with 1 Peter chapter one today. For my apocryphal reading I continued with the second last chapter of Sirach in the Brenton LXX.
