At last, after a 13-month long journey of readings since early December 2025, I finally completed my 13th Cycle of NT readings on New Year Day 01Jan2026.

Meanwhile I am barely reaching 40% of my targetted 7th Cycle of OT reading after spending 14½ months on it. I'm afraid I'll have to press on until the end of 2026 to finish it. Tomorrow, I will embark on my 14th round of NT reading, planning to complete it together with my OT readings at the end of the year.

Passage for Today
And Samuel said,
“Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices,
as in obeying the voice of the Lord?
Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice,
and to hearken than the fat of rams.

Today's post is an update of my slow reading over the past three months. I will not be able to complete my 7th round of Old Testament and my 13th round of New Testament reading by the end of this year. (My original target was to finish both 13th and 14th rounds of the NT along with the 7th round of OT.)

Passage for Today
20 But you, beloved, keep building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit.
21 Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to eternal life.
22 On some have compassion, making a distinction,
23 and some save, snatching them out of the fire with fear, hating even the clothing stained by the flesh.
24 Now to him who is able to keep them from stumbling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory in great joy,
25 to God our Savior, who alone is wise, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and forever. Amen.

Over the past four weeks, I have finished reading the last twelve chapters of Judges, followed by the book of Ruth and two chapters from First Samuel. In my New Testament readings, I completed the last four chapters of Acts, the entire Epistle of Paul to the Romans, and the first eleven chapters of First Corinthians.

Passage of the Day
See then the goodness and severity of God. Toward those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in his goodness; otherwise you also will be cut off.
Romans 11:22  World English Bible

My thoughts for today is about the severity of God's punishment upon those refuse to believe Him and who go against his will. However, as Paul wrote about the unbelief of the Israelites in Romans 11:23,

"They also, if they don't continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again."
— those who turn back from unbelief and obey the will of God can find grace in Him. I wrote my thoughts on this 15 years ago, from the account about King Rehoboam in 2 Chronicles 10, posted in the link below —

Deleted notes : a painful misstep

OT  5th Cycle.   NT  9th Cycle.

The detailed day-by-day record of my Bible readings for the past 18 days are lost. I have been recording the daily entries on Google Keep notes and today, after I have updated my overall Old and New Testament progress, I deleted them accidentally before I copied them over to this blog. Unfortunately, Google Keep does not allow me to undo and restore deleted texts once I have closed the note.

It was a painful misstep for me.

As a result, I can only post a summary of my reading progress below, without the detailed books, chapters and verses I covered for each of the past 18 days:

Noteworthy Passages of the Day
1 Therefore, because we have been declared righteous by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we boast in the hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only this, but we also boast in our afflictions, because we know that affliction produces patient endurance, 4 and patient endurance, proven character, and proven character, hope, 5 and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
Romans 5:1 - 5  Lexham English Bible
26 And likewise also, the Spirit helps us in our weakness, for we do not know how to pray as one ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with unexpressed groanings. 27 And the one who searches our hearts knows what the mindset of the Spirit is, because he intercedes on behalf of the saints according to the will of God. 28 And we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, for those who are called according to his purpose, 29 because those whom he foreknew, he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he should be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those whom he predestined, these he also called, and those whom he called, these he also justified, and those whom he justified, these he also glorified.
Romans 8:26-30  Lexham English Bible
if you confess with your mouth “Jesus is Lord” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved
Romans 10:9  Lexham English Bible
5 Now may the God of patient endurance and of encouragement grant you to be in agreement with one another, in accordance with Christ Jesus, 6 so that with one mind you may glorify with one mouth the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Romans 15:5-6  Lexham English Bible
14 Now God has not only raised the Lord, but will also raise us up through His power.

I missed my Bible reading session yesterday, so today I read double portions of both the Old and New Testaments.

I finished reading the book of Ruth and the epistle to the Romans two days ago, and have begun reading First Samuel. Today, I begin reading First Corinthians.

Passage of the day

Verse 6 in 1 Samuel chapter 16 tells us that Samuel, having been sent to the house of Jesse the Ephrathite of Bethlehem Judah to anoint one of his sons to be King, looked at Eliab son of Jesse and said, "Surely the LORD's anointed is before Him".

But the LORD said to Samuel, “Don’t look on his face, or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for I don’t see as man sees. For man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”
1 Samuel 16:7  World English Bible, British Edition

Then Jesse called Abinadab, followed by Shammah, and one by one altogether seven of his eight sons passed before Samuel the prophet.

None of them were chosen by the LORD.

It turned out that the chosen son was the youngest, who was herding sheep outside in the pastures. Verse 12 tells us that this young man had a youthful looking handsome appearance and did not look anything like a king, but the LORD told Samuel,

"Arise! Anoint him, for this is he."
He sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, with a handsome face and good appearance. The LORD said, “Arise! Anoint him, for this is he.”
1 Samuel 16:12  World English Bible

Nobody knew that David was well trained for war. David went through combat training while herding his father's flocks of sheep. I wrote a commentary on this about thirteen years ago, link below:

More recently, about six months ago, I wrote about the trust that David had in the LORD, that just as the LORD had saved him from bears and lions which he fought off with his bare hands, the LORD would also save him from the giant Goliath whom he fought without sword nor shield:

Brothers and Sisters in the Anointed One, people around us may look at us and judge us only by our outward appearance. God, however, looks at our hearts.

Today, let us ask ourselves, "What does God see in my heart?"

Took bread, gave thanks, broke it and ate

Tuesday 15Feb2022

Today's Passages
1 Samuel 25:1 - 31:13 GNB (161 verses)
Acts 27:1 - 28:31 RV (75 verses)
Romans 1:1 - 32 RV (32 verses)

This afternoon in my New Testament reading, I came across a passage in Acts chapter 27 telling us that the Apostle Paul, in his voyage to Rome, just before his ship was wrecked at Malta, took bread, gave thanks to God in front of everyone in the ship. and broke it before eating.

Acts 27:33 - 35 RV Revised Version
33 And while the day was coming on, Paul besought them all to take some food, saying, This day is the fourteenth day that ye wait and continue fasting, having taken nothing. 34 Wherefore I beseech you to take some food: for this is for your safety: for there shall not a hair perish from the head of any of you. 35 And when he had said this, and had taken bread, he gave thanks to God in the presence of all: and he brake it, and began to eat.

This reminds us of the way our Lord Iesus the Anointed One broke bread with his disciples at his Last Supper:

Luke 22:19 RV Revised Version
And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and gave to them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.

Later, in 1 Corinthians chapter 23, the Apostle Paul recounted what the Lord did on the night of the Last Supper:

1 Corinthians 11:23 - 24 RV Revised Version
For I received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, how that the Lord Jesus in the night in which he was betrayed took bread; 24 and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, This is my body, which is for you: this do in remembrance of me.

Brothers and Sisters in the Anointed One, let us remember the way our Lord broke bread with his disciples. Let us recall that the apostle also broke bread in a similar manner in front of the people on board the ill-fated ship. Let us also do likewise with food that the LORD gives us at each meal, to take hold of it in our hands, to give thanks to God for it, and to apportion it before having it for our meal.

The Way which they call heresy - the Nazarene sect

Monday 14Feb2022

Today's Passages
1 Samuel 20:1 - 24:22 ESV (131 verses)
Acts 24:1 - 26:32 RBV (86 verses)

Did you know that in the early days, Christians were called Nazarenes?

From my New Testament reading this morning, I observed from the words of Tertullus the Orator in Acts 24:5 that the faith of the early disciples was called "the sect of the Nazarenes". This faith was also known as "the Way" and it was considered heretical by the Jews from Jerusalem at that time. (Acts 24:14)

Acts 24:5, 14 RBV Revised Berkeley Version
(Tertullus, an orator) 5 For we have found this man to be a veritable plague, stirring up, as he does, all the Jews on earth, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes

(Apostle Paul) 14 I confess this to you, however, that according to the Way which they call heresy, even so I worship the God of my fathers, believing in everything written in the Law and the Prophets.

Earlier in chapter 22, when Paul was making his defence in Hebrew before the riotous crowd at the entrance to the Roman army barracks in Jerusalem, he testified that the Lord told him in his encounter on the way to Damascus, "I am Iesus the Nazarene, whom you are persecuting . . . " (Acts 22:8b RBV)

Another observation I made in my reading of Acts chapter 24 today is that Governor Felix of Caesarea, before whom Paul was brought for examination, was well-versed in the teachings of "the Way" of the Nazarenes. And he was probably also quite familiar with the teachings of the Torah and the tradition of the Jews because his wife, Drusilla, was Jewish.

Acts 24:22, 24 RBV
22 Since Felix understood the teachings of the Way quite well, he adjourned the case

24 After a few days, when Felix was present with his wife Drusilla, a Jewess, he sent for Paul and listened to him concerning faith in Christ Jesus.

However, governor Felix dared not evaluate this faith of "the Way" honestly and personally, probably because it was called a heresy by the Jews. When the Apostle Paul discussed with him things pertaining to righteousnes, mastery of passions, and the coming judgment, he became frightened and dismissed Paul.

Acts 24:25 RBV
But as he discussed righteousness, the mastery of passions, and the coming judgment, Felix got frightened and responded, "You may go for now . . ."

Fighting with neither sword nor shield

Today's Passages
1 Samuel 16:1 - 19:24 WEB (135 verses)
Acts 21:1 - 23:35 RBV (105 verses)

Only a boy named David
Only a rippling brook
Only a boy named David
Five little stones he took . . .

I learnt the song above when I was in Standard Four in 1970 in Methodist Boys' Primary School, Davidson Road, Kuala Lumpur. It was taught to us by our Headmaster during weekly chapel service.

This morning as I read First Samuel chapter 17, this little song came back to mind and brought back images of a boy swinging a stone at a giant's forehead.

From this morning's reading, my attention was drawn towards David's words in verse 37, telling King Saul that the LORD had saved him from lions and bears which he had killed with his bare hands, and that the LORD would likewise save him from Goliath the Philistine giant.

1 Samuel 17:34 - 37  GNB  Good News Bible
34“Your Majesty,” David said, “I take care of my father's sheep. Whenever a lion or a bear carries off a lamb, 35I go after it, attack it, and rescue the lamb. And if the lion or bear turns on me, I grab it by the throat and beat it to death. 36I have killed lions and bears, and I will do the same to this heathen Philistine, who has defied the army of the living God. 37The LORD has saved me from lions and bears; he will save me from this Philistine.”

Eventually, when David was face to face with Goliath on the battleground, he told Goliath these words:

1 Samuel 17:45 - 47  GNB
45David answered, “You are coming against me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the Israelite armies, which you have defied. 46This very day the LORD will put you in my power; I will defeat you and cut off your head. And I will give the bodies of the Philistine soldiers to the birds and animals to eat. Then the whole world will know that Israel has a God, 47and everyone here will see that the LORD does not need swords or spears to save his people. He is victorious in battle, and he will put all of you in our power.”

In the end, David, using only a sling and stone, defeated the giant who was armed with sword, spear and javelin. David fought without sword and without shield.

He fought in the Name of YeHoVaH Almighty!

Third Missionary Journey and the Journey to Rome

Saturday 2021.07.31

Shabbat Shalom.

On this Seventh Day Sabbath, I finished reading both the books of First Samuel in the OT and the Acts of the Apostles in the NT.

In my NT reading, I read Acts chapters nineteen through twenty-eight, the final ten chapters, which contain the account of Apostle Paul's third missionary journey, his arrest by Captain Claudius Lysias at Jerusalem, his hearings before governor Felix, governor Porcius Festus, and King Agrippa at Caesarea, before being sent on his final journey to Rome to be tried before Caesar Augustus.

In the OT, I read the last six chapters of First Samuel.

Tomorrow I will begin reading Second Samuel using Today's English Version, and the Epistle of Paul to the Romans using the New King James Version.

Expelled from Antioch Pisidia, fled from Iconium, stoned at Lystra

Thursday 2021.07.29

Today I read chapters eleven through fourteen of the Acts of the Apostles. The passage in Acts 13:4 - 14:26 records the account of the First Missionary Journey of the Apostle Paul accompanied by Barnabas.

Upon being sent out by the assembly at Antioch, Paul and Barnabas made their way to the nearby port of Seleucia Pieria bringing John Mark along with them. From Seleucia, they sailed to the city of Salamis on the island of Cyprus, crossed the entire length of Cyprus to the southern city of Paphos, then sailed northward to Perga in Pamphylia.

John Mark left them at Perga and returned to Jerusalem:

Acts 31:13 KJV
Now when Paul and his company loosed from Paphos, they came to Perga in Pamphylia: and John departing from them returned to Jerusalem.

From Perga, Paul and Barnabas travelled northwards by land to Antioch in Pisidia where after preaching to many people, they were expelled by devout and honourable women and chief men of the city who were stirred up by the Jews (Acts 13:50).

Paul and Barnabas went on to Iconium where some Gentiles and Jews plotted to capture and stone them, making them flee from Iconium to Lystra.

At Lystra, after Paul had healed a cripple, both of Paul and Barnabas were mistaken by the locals for being pagan gods who had come to visit them. Eventually a group of Jews came from Antioch and Iconium. They stirred up the people to stone Paul and to drag him out of the city, leaving him for dead. (14:19)

However, Paul recovered and continued his journey with Barnabas to Derbe, then returned to Lystra, Iconium, Antioch, and finally back to Perga in Pamphylia, preaching the gospel and ordaining elders in every assembly (Acts 14:23). From Perga they visited one more city, Attalia in Pamphylia, before they sailed all the way back to Antioch.

My OT reading for today is from 1 Samuel chapters fifteen through nineteen.

Wednesday 2021.07.28

In my NT reading today, I covered chapters eight through ten of the Acts of the Apostles.

Acts chapter ten records the account of the Apostle Peter preaching to the household of Cornelius the Centurion in Caesarea. While they were listening to the Gospel of the Lord Iesus the Anointed One, the Holy Spirit fell upon them and they spoke in other languages (tongues), and magnified God (Acts 10:46 KJV)

I was particularly impressed by the words of the Apostle Peter in his preaching to the household of Cornelius when I read this passage one Easter morning back in April 2009, about nineteen years ago. I have never read nor heard any preaching of the Gospel as clearly and powerfully as that preached by the Apostle Peter in Acts chapter ten.

Please visit my short devotional blog post on this passage written on 12Apr2009 entitled, An Act of God.

My OT reading today continues with 1 Samuel chapters eleven through fourteen.

Today's Passages:
1Samuel 11:1 - 14:52 NIV
Acts 8:1 - 10:48 KJV

Stephen's testimony: from Calling to Covenant

Tuesday 2021.07.27

Today I real chapters six and seven from the Acts of the Apostles. The passage in Acts 7:1 - 50 KJV contains the account of the martyr Stephen testifying against the High Priest and the members of the Council.

He reminded them of the disobedience and rebelliousness of their forefathers by recounting the entire story of the people of Israel from the calling of Abraham, to slavery in Egypt, to the Covenant which Yehovah established with Moses.

For my OT reading I reading another seven chapters from 1 Samuel, the third book in the Former Prophets of the Neviim in the Hebrew Scriptures.

Today's Passages:
1 Samuel 4:1 - 10:27 NIV
Acts 6:1 - 7:60 KJV

Hannah poured out her soul to Yehovah

Monday 2021.07.26

Having completed my first cycle of reading the LXX Apocrypha yesterday, I will not be reading the Apocrypha for the rest of this year. Instead, I will focus on finishing my current second cycle of OT and third cycle of NT readings.

My OT reading today covers the first three chapters of 1 Samuel, containing the account of how the LORD answered Hannah's prayers that were offered at the Temple when she poured out her soul to the LORD in gried and anguish after being childless for many years.

In the NT, I continued reading another three chapters of the Acts of the Apostles.

Today's Passages:
1Samuel 1:1 - 3:21 NIV
Acts 3:1 - 5:42 KJV
