Today, I have finished the 7th round of my Old Testament reading as I arrive at the end of the Book of Malachi. I began this 7th round of OT reading on 01Dec2024 and it has taken me more than 22 months to complete my reading cycle, a task that took me only about 10 months in previous cycles.

I have also completed my 14th round of New Testament reading about a week ago, again this reading cycle had taken me longer than usual: having begun in mid-February, it took me almost eight months to finish reading until the end of Revelations.

I will take a break from intensive Bible readings from now on until the end of the year and will embark on my 8th Cycle of OT concurrently with my 15th and 16th Cycles of NT readings starting from January 2027.

Passage for Today
“Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me.
And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight,
behold, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts.

Malachi 3:1

Over the past week I have finished reading all but one of the books of minor prophets, leaving only the Book of Malachi to be read tomorrow to mark the completion of the 6th Cycle of Old Testament reading.

In the New Testament, I finished the Gospel of Luke yesterday and embarked on the first six chapters of the Gospel of John today. I am on track to finish my 12th Cycle of New Testament reading by the end of the year, perhaps even earlier.

Passage for Today
Rejoice greatly, daughter of Zion; shout, daughter of Jerusalem: behold, your king comes to you; he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding on a donkey, even on a colt the foal of a donkey.
Zechariah 9:9  World English Bible
I will pour on the house of David, and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplication; and they shall look to me whom they have pierced; and they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one who is in bitterness for his firstborn.
Zechariah 12:10  World English Bible
12 On the next day a great multitude had come to the feast. When they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,
13 they took the branches of the palm trees, and went out to meet him, and cried out, 'Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, the King of Israel!'
14 Jesus, having found a young donkey, sat on it. As it is written,
15 'Don't be afraid, daughter of Zion. Behold, your King comes, sitting on a donkey's colt.'
16 His disciples didn't understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about him, and that they had done these things to him.

John 12:12 – 16  World English Bible
Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, including those who pierced him. All the tribes of the earth will mourn over him. Even so, Amen.
Revelation 1:7  World English Bible

Over the last week, I have finished reading the last two books of the Old Testament bringing me to the conclusion of my 5th Cycle of OT readings.

In my New Testament readings, I continued with reading the Epistles to the Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and the First Epistle to the Thessalonians.

Passage of the Day
And thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, little to be among the thousands of Judah, out of thee shall he come forth unto me [who is] to be Ruler in Israel: whose goings forth are from of old, from the days of eternity.
Micah 5:2  JN Darby's Translation
12 . . . Thus speaketh Jehovah of hosts, saying, Behold a man whose name is [the] Branch; and he shall grow up from his own place, and he shall build the temple of Jehovah:
13 even he shall build the temple of Jehovah; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a priest upon his throne; and the counsel of peace shall be between them both.

Zechariah 6:12 – 13  JN Darby's Translation

Today we are reminded by the prophets Micah and Zechariah that our Lord Iesus the Anointed is the Ruler from of Old, the Branch who will build the Temple of God and who will be both Ruler and Priest upon His Throne.

Over the past five days, I have sprinted through a series of short books of minor prophets in the OT and similarly short epistles in the NT.

In the remaining ten days of December, before the year is over, there is one book each in the OT and NT left to be read — Malachi and Revelation.

Passage of the Day

Isaiah chapters 8 and 28, and likewise Psalm 118, contain prophecies about a corner-stone chosen by God at which some will take offense and over which some will stumble. However, those who put their trust in this corner-stone will not be put to shame.

1 Peter 2:6 – 8  KJV  King James Version
6 Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.
7 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,
8 And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.
Esaias 28:16  LXX  Septuagint Brenton
therefore thus saith the Lord, even the Lord,
Behold, I lay for the foundations of Sion a costly stone, a choice, a corner-stone, a precious stone, for its foundations; and he that believes on him shall by no means be ashamed
Romans 9:33  WEB  World English Bible
even as it is written, 'Behold, I lay in Zion a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense. And no one who believes in him will be put to shame.'
Psalm 117 (118):22 – 23  LXX  Septuagint Brenton
22 The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner.
23 This has been done of the Lord; and it is wonderful in our eyes.
Matthew 21:42  WEB  World English Bible
Jesus said to them, 'Did you never read in the scriptures, 'The stone which the builders rejected, The same was made the head of the corner. This was from the Lord. It is marvelous in our eyes?'
Mark 12:10 – 11  WEB  World English Bible
10 Haven't you even read this scripture: 'The stone which the builders rejected, The same was made the head of the corner.
11 This was from the Lord, It is marvelous in our eyes'?'
Luke 20:17  WEB  World English Bible
But he looked at them, and said, 'Then what is this that is written, 'The stone which the builders rejected, The same was made the chief cornerstone?'
Acts 4:11  WEB  World English Bible
He is 'the stone which was regarded as worthless by you, the builders, which was made the head of the corner.'
Eph 2:19 – 20  WEB  World English Bible
19 So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God,
20 being built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the chief cornerstone;
Esaias 8:14 – 15  LXX  Septuagint Brenton
14 And if thou shalt trust in him, he shall be to thee for a sanctuary; and ye shall not come against him as against a stumbling-stone, neither as against the falling of a rock: but the houses of Jacob are in a snare, and the dwellers in Jerusalem in a pit.
15 Therefore many among them shall be weak, and fall, and be crushed; and they shall draw nigh, and men shall be taken securely.
Romans 9:33  WEB  World English Bible
even as it is written, 'Behold, I lay in Zion a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense. And no one who believes in him will be put to shame.'

Brothers and Sisters in the Anointed One, let us not be ashamed to put our trust in Iesou the Chief Cornerstone, Elect and Precious.

One more book to go

Friday 20May2022
Zechariah 5:1 - 14:21 KJV (153 verses)
2 Corinthians 7:1 - 13:14 KJV (141 verses)

Today i finished reading the Book of the prophet Zechariah ben Berechiah ben Iddo. This is the second last book in the Old Testament.

I have one more book to read tomorrow, the Book of the prophet Malachi, before I complete my Third Cycle of Old Testament reading.

For my New Testament reading, I have reached the end of the Second Epistle of Paul to the Corinthians. Tomorrow, I will begin reading the Epistle to the Galatians.

Paradoxes of the apostles' lives

Thursday 19May2022
Habakkuk 1:1 - 3:19 KJV (56 verses)
Zephaniah 1:1 - 3:20 KJV (53 verses)
Haggai 1:1 - 2:23 KJV (48 verses)
Zechariah 1:1 - 4:14 (58 verses)
2 Corinthians 1:1 - 6:18 WEB (114 verses)

In my New Testament reading this afternoon, I came across two passages from the Second Epistle of Paul to the Corinthians where the Apostle describes their lives (Paul's and Timothy's) by a string of paradoxes.

Firstly, in chapter 4 of his epistle, the Apostle likens life to "treasure in clay vessels", where the great power of God delivers them from much hardship and suffering, where despite being hard pressed, perplexed, pursued, struck down, and at risk of being put to death, the apostles are not crushed, desperate, forsaken, nor destroyed.

2 Corinthians 4:7 - 12  WEB  World English Bible
But we have this treasure in clay vessels, that the exceeding greatness of the power may be of God and not from ourselves.
We are
  • pressed on every side, yet not crushed;
  • perplexed, yet not to despair;
  • pursued, yet not forsaken;
  • struck down, yet not destroyed;
  • always carrying in the body the putting to death of the Lord Jesus,
    • that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.
  • For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus’ sake,
    • that the life also of Jesus may be revealed in our mortal flesh.
  • So then death works in us, but life in you.

Further on, in chapter 6, the Apostle juxtaposes a list of ten forms of sufferings against eight forms of godliness in his description of their lives as servants of God. Sufferings such as endurance, afflictions, hardships, beatings, imprisonments are contrasted against godly characteristics such as purity, knowledge, perseverance, the Holy Spirit, sincere love, and the word of truth.

The apostle ends his list with ten paradoxes, from "glory and dishonour", to "unknown and yet well known", "sorrowful yet always rejoicing" and ending with "having nothing yet possessing all things".

2 Corinthians 6:3 - 10  WEB  World English Bible
We give no occasion of stumbling in anything, that our service may not be blamed, but in everything commending ourselves as servants of God:
  • in great endurance,
  • in afflictions,
  • in hardships,
  • in distresses,
  • in beatings,
  • in imprisonments,
  • in riots,
  • in labours,
  • in watchings,
  • in fastings,

  • in pureness,
  • in knowledge,
  • in perseverance,
  • in kindness,
  • in the Holy Spirit,
  • in sincere love,
  • in the word of truth,
  • in the power of God,

  • by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left,
  • by glory and dishonour,
  • by evil report and good report,
  • as deceivers and yet true,
  • as unknown and yet well known,
  • as dying and behold—we live,
  • as punished and not killed,
  • as sorrowful yet always rejoicing,
  • as poor yet making many rich,
  • as having nothing and yet possessing all things.

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord Iesus Anointed One, like the Apostle, we are also called to live a paradoxical life. When hardship and distress come our way, let us harness the power of God through purity, knowledge, perseverance, kindness, and sincere love by the presence of the Holy Spirit, in the power of God.

A sprint through twenty chapters of Minor Prophets

Wednesday 2021.09.29

In the NT today, I read through chapters 5 and 6 of the Matthew using the Revised Berkeley Version. Tomorrow I will continue with Matthew chapter 7 using J.N.Darby's translation.

For my OT reading, I sprinted through the remaining three books of the Minor Prophets - Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi - a total of twenty chapters. This brings me to the end of the Neviim part of the Hebrew Scripture divisions. Tomorrow I will begin reading the Khetuvim part, starting with the Psalms. (See link below for details of Torah, Neviim, and Khetuvim divisions of scripture.)

Today's Passages:
Haggai 1:1 - 2:23 NIV
Zechariah 1:1 - 14:21 NIV
Malachi 1:1 - 4:6 NIV -- Psalm 1 KJV
Matthew 5:1 - 6:34 RBV -- Matt 7 JND

Finishing the last book of the OT

Saturday 2021.06.12
Malay: hari Sabtu, Hebrew: Shabbat (the Seventh Day)

Shabbat Shalom.

On this Sabbath Day of Rest, I finished reading the remaining five chapters of Zechariah followed by the entire four-chapter book of Malachi. I have arrived at the end of the Old Testament in this first cycle of OT readings which I started in May last year, a journey of fourteen months.

During these thirteen months, I have also read the New Testament and the Apocrypha concurrently. Having finished one cycle of the NT along the way, I am now on the final approach towards completing my NT readings, currently at Matthew chapter 8, with only the Gospels waiting to be read.

In my Apocryphal reading today, I read another chapter from 1 Maccabees.

Summary:
Zechariah 10:1 - 14:21 American Standard Version
Malachi 1:1 - 4:6 ASV
Matthew 8:1 - 34 King James Version
1 Maccabees 12:1 - 53 LXX Brenton

A sunny Sixth Day

Friday 2021.06.11
Malay: hari Jumaat, Hebrew: Shishi (the Sixth Day)

Today, the Sixth Day of the biblical week, is a sunny Friday morning as we prepare for the arrival of Sabbath at sundown this evening. I proceeded with another six chapters of the book of Zechariah, bringing me to chapter 9 and leaving me with only five more chapters before the end of the book.

In the NT, I read the entire Sermon on the Mount from Matthew chapters five through seven, while in the LXX Apocrypha, I read yet another long chapter from the convoluted stories of 1 Maccabees

Summary:
Zechariah 4:1 - 9:17 American Standard Version
Matthew 5:1 - 7:29 King James Version
1 Maccabees 11:1 - 74 Septuagint Brenton

10 June 2021

A very long chapter

Thursday 2021.06.10
Malay: hari Khamis, Hebrew: Chamishi (the Fifth Day)

Today I read the longest chapter so far in this cycle of OT readings: 89 verses in chapter ten of 1 Maccabees. I have also finished reading the two chapters in the short book of Haggai, leaving me only with Zechariah (which I have begun reading today) and Malachi as the remaining books of the OT.

With only eleven chapters of Zechariah and four chapters of Malachi left to be read, I will stop my concurrent reading of two books a day in the OT. From tomorrow onwards, I will be reading only Zechariah, after which I will proceed with Malachi, the final book of the OT. That will conclude the first cycle of OT reading which began in May last year.

Summary:
Haggai 1:1 - 2:23 J.N.Darby's Translation --> (ended)
Zechariah 1:1 - 3:10 American Standard Version
Matthew 4:1 - 25 King James Version
1 Maccabees 10:1 - 89 Septuagint Brenton
