Reading has continued to be slow and frequently interrupted through the months of July and the first two weeks of August. In the New Testament, I finished reading the Second Epistle of Paul to the Corinthians followed by the entire Epistles to the Galatians and to the Ephesians. In the Old Testament I have covered the first thirteen chapters of the Book of Joshua.

Passage for Today

Most of my readings over the past ten days were done during my recent visit to Hangzhou, Suzhou, and Shanghai in the Jiangnan district of China.

This is the first time I manage to continue with my daily Bible readings while travelling, mostly at night back at the hotel after a long day of sight-seeing, with some reading done on long bus journeys between distant cities, and on the five hour flights to and fro.

I have now read about 90% of the New Testament.

Since last Wednesday, I have finished reading the prophets Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, and Haggai, along with three chapters of Zechariah in the Old Testament.

In my New Testament readings, I covered the last four chapters of Second Corinthians followed by all six chapters of Galatians.

Passage of the Day
5 Believe ye not in a companion, put not confidence in a familiar friend: keep the doors of thy mouth from her that lieth in thy bosom. 6 For the son dishonoureth the father, the daughter riseth up against her mother, the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law: a man's enemies are the men of his own household. 7 But as for me, I will look unto Jehovah; I will wait for the °God of my salvation: my °God will hear me.
Micah 7:5 – 7  JN Darby's Translation
21 “Brother will deliver up brother to death, and the father his child. Children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death. 22 You will be hated by all men for my name’s sake, but he who endures to the end will be saved.
Matthew 10:21 - 22  World English Bible
34 “Don’t think that I came to send peace on the earth. I didn’t come to send peace, but a sword. 35 For I came to set a man at odds against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. 36 A man’s foes will be those of his own household. 37 He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he who loves son or daughter more than me isn’t worthy of me.
Matthew 10:34 - 37  World English Bible

The Prophet Micah of Moresheth-Gath prophesied that a perplexing time will come in future when people become so wicked that one cannot even trust his own family and friends. In fact, a man's enemies will come from his own household (Micah 7:6)

This words are echoed in the teachings of our Lord Iesus in Matthew chapter 10, when the Lord warned his disciples about the difficult times that will have to pass before his Second Coming.

In fact, our Lord told the disciples that it was his very ministry among the children of Israel at that time that would trigger such disturbing conflicts, setting children against parents to the extent that a man's foes will be those of his won household (Matthew 10:36).

In saying these words, our Lord revealed to his disciples that the fulfilment of the prophecy in Micah chapter 7 was already happening.

It is in this context — that of the fulfilment of Micah's prophecy — that our Lord told his disciples these solemn words in Matthew 10:37 :

He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me;
and he who loves son or daughter more than me isn’t worthy of me.

Brothers and Sisters in the Anointed One, we are living in difficult times. We are surrounded by wickedness. Many around us will hate us because of the Name of Iesus, even those of our own family. What shall we do? How shall we live through such times?

The prophet Micah has the answer, "But as for me, I will look unto Yehovah, I will wait for the God of my Salvation. My God will hear me" (Micah 7:7 JND).

Our Lord likewise told his disciples, " . . . he who endures to the end will be saved." (Matthew 10:22 WEB)

Let us continually look to Our Father in Heaven, the God of Salvation. He will hear us. Let us endure to the end. We will be saved.

Deleted notes : a painful misstep

OT  5th Cycle.   NT  9th Cycle.

The detailed day-by-day record of my Bible readings for the past 18 days are lost. I have been recording the daily entries on Google Keep notes and today, after I have updated my overall Old and New Testament progress, I deleted them accidentally before I copied them over to this blog. Unfortunately, Google Keep does not allow me to undo and restore deleted texts once I have closed the note.

It was a painful misstep for me.

As a result, I can only post a summary of my reading progress below, without the detailed books, chapters and verses I covered for each of the past 18 days:

A summary of my Bible reading cycles can be found below:

Noteworthy Passages of the Day
1 Therefore, because we have been declared righteous by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we boast in the hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only this, but we also boast in our afflictions, because we know that affliction produces patient endurance, 4 and patient endurance, proven character, and proven character, hope, 5 and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
Romans 5:1 - 5  Lexham English Bible
26 And likewise also, the Spirit helps us in our weakness, for we do not know how to pray as one ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with unexpressed groanings. 27 And the one who searches our hearts knows what the mindset of the Spirit is, because he intercedes on behalf of the saints according to the will of God. 28 And we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, for those who are called according to his purpose, 29 because those whom he foreknew, he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he should be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those whom he predestined, these he also called, and those whom he called, these he also justified, and those whom he justified, these he also glorified.
Romans 8:26-30  Lexham English Bible
if you confess with your mouth “Jesus is Lord” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved
Romans 10:9  Lexham English Bible
5 Now may the God of patient endurance and of encouragement grant you to be in agreement with one another, in accordance with Christ Jesus, 6 so that with one mind you may glorify with one mouth the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Romans 15:5-6  Lexham English Bible
14 Now God has not only raised the Lord, but will also raise us up through His power.
1 Corinthians 6:14  New American Standard Bible

Jeremiah 23:1 - 37:21 NIV (411 verses)
Galatians 1:1 - 6;18 WEB (149 verses)
Ephesians 1:1 - 6:24 WEB (155 verses)

For today's Old Testament reading, I covered another fifteen chapters of Jeremiah, bringing me to the end of chapter 37.

In the New Testament, I read through both the Epistles to the Galatians and Ephesians.

Passage of the Day

6 And Jeremiah said, “The word of the Lord came to me, saying, 7 ‘Behold, Hanamel the son of Shallum your uncle will come to you, saying, “Buy my field which is in Anathoth, for the right of redemption is yours to buy it.” ’ 8 Then Hanamel my uncle’s son came to me in the court of the prison according to the word of the Lord, and said to me, ‘Please buy my field that is in Anathoth, which is in the country of Benjamin; for the right of inheritance is yours, and the redemption yours; buy it for yourself.’ Then I knew that this was the word of the Lord.
Jeremiah 32:6 - 8  New King James Version

Jeremiah became certain, he "knew", that the instructions he had heard earlier about buying over his uncle's field in Anatoth was really the word of the LORD when he saw Hanamel face to face in the court where he was imprisoned.

Likewise with us, when the word of God is proven true by significant events happening in our lives, we know that we have believed in the true word of our God and Father in Heaven.

Nine years ago, I wrote my observations of Jeremiah 32:8 briefly in a blog post, link below:

Tomorrow I will continue reading 2 Samuel in the Old Testament and proceed with the Epistle to the Ephesians in the New Testament.

Passage of the day

I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Iesus

Sunday 22May2022
OT reading to resume on 01Jul22
Galatians 5:1 – 6:18 WEB (44 verses)
Ephesians 1:1 - 6:24 WEB (155 verses)

Having finished reading the Old Testament yesterday, I will be reading only the New Testament from today onwards until the end of June. After that I will embark on my next cycle of Old Testament again.

In my reading of the Epistle of Paul to the Ephesians this afternoon, I read the prayer of the apostle for the assembly at Ephesus from chapter 3 verses 14 to 19.

In making this prayer, the Apostle bows his knees to the Father of our Lord Iesus the Anointed, asking for strength, for love, and for understanding of the love of the Anointed One to be granted to the Ephesian brethren.

Ephesians 3:14 - 19  WEB  World English Bible
For this cause, I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord, Jesus Christ,
from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named,
that he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory,
that you may be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inward man;
that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith;
to the end that you,
being rooted and grounded in love,
may be strengthened
to comprehend with all the saints
what is the breadth and length and height and depth,
and to know Christ's love which surpasses knowledge,
that you may be filled to all the fullness of God.

I first wrote my thoughts about this prayer nine years ago in my devotional blog post. Last August, I wrote another post on it again, paying attention to the word "Christ", the Anointed One. The following are the links to my posts:

Reminders from the prophet Malachi

Saturday 21May2022
Malachi 1:1 – 4:6 NWB (55 verses)
Galatians 1:1 – 4:31 WEB (105 verses)

Today, in my reading of Malachi, the last book in the Old Testament, I came across two reminders of the promised Kingdom of God.

The first reminder comes from Malachi chapter 1 where, in verse 11, the prophet records the word of the LORD telling the people of Edom that His Name shall be great among the Gentiles, "from the rising of the sun until its setting".

Malachi 1:11  NWB  Noah Webster Bible
For from the rising of the sun even to the setting of the same,
my name shall be great among the Gentiles;
and in every place incense shall be offered to my name,
and a pure offering: for my name shall be great among the heathen,
saith the LORD of hosts.

This prophecy about Gentiles giving glory to the Name of the LORD is also written in Psalm 113. In verses 3 and 4, the psalmist writes that "from the rising of the sun to its going down" the Name of the LORD is to be praised, and that the LORD is high above ALL nations.

Psalm 113:3 - 4  KJV  King James Version
From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same
the LORD's name is to be praised.
The LORD is high above all nations,
and his glory above the heavens.

The second reminder from my reading of the Book of Malachi today comes from verse 1 of chapter 3 where Malachi prophesies that God will send a messenger to clear the way before Him, followed by another messenger called "the Lord whom ye seek", who is the "Messenger of the Covenant" whom the people have been longing for.

Malachi 3:1  NWB  Noah Webster Bible
Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, will suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he will come, saith the LORD of hosts.

About twelve years ago, I wrote my thoughts in two blog posts about my observations from Malachi chapter 3, links below:

Today in my New Testament reading, I am reminded that our Heavenly Father, God Almighty, Creator of the Heavens and Earth, is also the God and Father of our Lord Iesus the Anointed One. On the day of resurrection, our Lord told Mary in John chapter 20:

John 20:17  WEB  World English Bible
Jesus said to her, 'Don't touch me, for I haven't yet ascended to my Father; but go to my brothers, and tell them, 'I am ascending to my Father and your Father, and my God and your God.''

This afternoon, I read in Second Corinthians chapter 11 the words of the apostle who refers to our God as the "God and Father" of the Lord Iesus.

2 Corinthians 11:31  WEB  World English Bible
The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, he who is blessed forevermore, knows that I don't lie.

Twelve years ago, I have written a blog post on thanksgiving, prayer and praise being offered to the God and Father of our Lord Iesus in the New Testament epistles:

Brothers and Sisters in the Anointed One, let us worship our God and Father in Heaven. Let us call upon Him as the God and the Father of our Lord Iesus.

I was away from my computer for the last two weeks, visiting my daughter's family whom I have not seen for two years because of border restrictions brought about by the Covid-19 Pandemic.

At last, I am back again at my desktop, writing this post and waking up to the reality of how many chapters I had managed to read while travelling and visiting my grandchildren.

From the end of November when I began preparing to embark on my journey, to the first week of December, I finished reading the entire epistle of Second Corinthians along with nineteen chapters of Second Chronicles up to the end of chapter 29.

Then from 09December until today, I read Galatians, Ephesians and Philippians. At the same time, I finished the remaining seven chapters of Second Chronicles, bringing me to the end of my 2nd Cycle of Old Testament Reading.

Today I embark on my 3rd Cycle of Old Testament Reading, beginning with the book of Genesis, covering the first three chapters.

All in all over the last two weeks, I have read a total of 701 verses from the Old Testament. From the New Testament, I read a total of 567 verses, bringing me to the end of Philippians in the current 4th Cycle of New Testament Reading.

A long read from Isaiah

Friday 2021.08.20

Today is the Sixth Day of the Biblical Week again. It is time to finish all necessary tasks for this week and to prepare to rest on the Seventh Day Sabbath which will begin at sunset this evening.

This morning, while waiting for my car to undergo preventive maintenance at the service centre, I managed to read a longer portion of the book of Isaiah, from chapter sixteen through twenty-eight, a total of thirteen chapters.

In the NT, I finished reading the last two chapters of the Epistle to the Galatians. Tomorrow, I will begin reading the Epistle to the Ephesians using the New King James Version.

Today's Passages:
Isaiah 16:1 - 28:29 NIV
Galatians 5:1 - 6:18 KJV --> Ephesians NKJV

The Root of Jesse

Thursday 2021.08.19

This morning I read Isaiah chapters eleven through fifteen.

Chapter eleven of this portion of scripture begins with a prophecy about the Messiah: that he will be a descendant of Jesse ben Obed (Yishai ben Obed in Hebrew, meaning "God's Gift"), grandson of Ruth and Boaz, of the tribe of Judah.

In the first three verses, the Messiah is described as a Shoot from the stump Jesse, and as a Branch from the root of Jesse. The Spirit of Yehovah will rest on Him.

Isaiah 11:1 - 3a NIV
1 A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse;
from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.
2 The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him—
the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and of might,
the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord—
3 and he will delight in the fear of the LORD.

Later in verse ten, the Messiah is called the Root of Jesse, and the Gentile nations will rally to Him.

Isaiah 11:10 NIV
In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples; the nations will rally to him, and his resting place will be glorious.

In my NT reading, I covered chapters three and four of the Epistle to the Galatians.

Today's Passages:
Isaiah 11:1 - 15:9 NIV
Galatians 3:1 - 4:31 KJV

Here am I, send me

Wednesday 2021.08.18

This morning I reading chapters six through ten of the book of Isaiah in the Latter Prophets division of the Neviim. (See my blog page, The Law, the Prophets, and the Writings for details of the Hebrew divisions of scripture into Torah, Neviim, and Khetuvim.)

Isaiah chapter 6 in today's reading contains the account of Isaiah's vision of the LORD sitting on His throne, high and mighty, with the train of his robe filling the Temple. Above the throne were seraphim, six-winged creatures, flying around and calling out,

Isaiah 6:3 NIV
And they were calling to one another:
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.”

It was the year when the King of Judah, Uzziah ben Amaziah died at the end of his 52 years of reign. In that vision, the prophet Isaiah was called to a mission of prophesying to the Kingdom of Judah.

Isaiah 6:8 NIV
Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”
And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”

For my NT reading to day, I started reading the Epistle of Paul to the Galatians, chapters 1 and 2.

Isaiah 6:1 - 10:34 NIV
Galatians 1:1 - 2:21 KJV
